Seminar highlighting differences between American and European Political and Cultural Values to a University Audience in Bulgaria

Just how much sway does culture have on a country's political decisions and foreign policy? Why is there such a clash of understanding and ideology between American and European political figures? On January 18, 2006, The American and British Studies Department of Plovdiv University, where Ronda Critchlow serves as a Junior English Language Fellow, invited David Siefkin, Public Affairs Officer (PAO) from the US Embassy in Sofia, Bulgaria to give a lecture open to students, educators, and the community at large. Mr. Siefkin’s lecture entitled "Cultural Wars- American vs. European Political and Cultural Values" underscored the differences between the American and European notions of freedom, free speech, freedom of religion, attitudes toward government, ways of solving problems, and how these concepts affect American foreign policy. After the lecture, Mr. Siefkin entertained questions from the audience to discuss issues related to his presentation. PAO Siefkin's timely lecture, followed by a question and answer session, was indeed a unique opportunity for university students to interact with a consummate professional well-versed in current political affairs and who effectively answered questions that have a direct impact on American and Bulgarian relations. There were approximately 100 people in attendance at this seminar.
